In (Outros) Fundamentos, Aline Motta brings together the visual archive she made in Nigeria and the one that comes from slavery in Brazil. The strangeness of the journey interrupted in her a sense of belonging. It replicated the distance, the disruption and the wound that slavery imprinted on the Brazilian social and political experience.

Bridges over the Abyss | Puentes sobre Abismos, 2017

Spurred on by the revelation of a family secret, Aline set off on a journey looking for traces of her ancestors. She traveled to rural areas in Rio de Janeiro/Brazil, Portugal and Sierra Leone, researching in private and public archives, and at the same time, creating a counter-narrative of what is usually told about how Brazilian families were formed. Drawing from her personal experiences, the piece aims to discuss larger issues like racism, usual forms of representation, the notion of belonging and identity in a society that is still trying to reckon with its violent History and the romanticized notions of its praised upon miscegenation.

Si el mar tuviese balcones | If the sea had balconies, 2017

If the sea had balconies | Si el mar tuviese balcones, 2017

“If the sea had balconies”, a 2-channel video installation, was built around an impossibility. Creating new verses for a well-known Portuguese rhyme, the piece reaches out from one end of the Atlantic to the other, bridging Brazil and the African continent, both metaphorically and spiritually, as the artist’s own family pictures flow in and out of the water. A mirror of the unconscious and our own inner self, water is seen as a vehicle for stories that are often hidden, and needs to be invoked in order to make themselves present. By bathing the portraits of her ancestors in water, it intends to bring them back to their places of origin, where everything begins and ends in constant cycles of renewal and transmutation.
