Landscapes / Microfilm is a series of photographs intervened with slide frames and E-6 film, works made in dialogue with an archive of thousands negatives from my father that I found at home during my childhood. In the images only the rips and marks of the passage of time are exhibited in the frames that were not originally exposed from the photo archive that my father took between the 70s and 80s, while he was a militant and photographer of the Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionario (MIR) in Chile, and Ecuador where he was exiled for 12 years. The images that seem similar to astronomy pictures, show what is captured in the sensible material, prescinding from the reference. The slides, which combine frames of the archive and current material, are constructed from notes that my father wrote in an epistolary exchange with me through emails, when he knew that I was going to start working on this archive, in 2016.

Una sombra oscilante | An Oscilating Shadow, 2017

An oscillating shadow establishes a dialogue with my father’s photographic archive, produced between 1970 and 1989, during his activism against the dictatorship in Chile and the twelve years of exile in Ecuador. It is set out as a series of exercises to approach the images that build and disappear memory and the fictional space that we can materialize and establish with it.

Between light and shadow, between the origin and the exile, between a dictatorship and a revolutionary project, between an identity and others, there is a place for another (a present) approach to the construction -or disintegration- of a memory.

By the oscillation of light and shadow the flash of lightning appears, a space that emerges and takes place in the middle of the ‘then’  of the archive and the ‘Now’ of its recognition.

The work is made by an artist book, a series of photographs and a light installation with two connected and synchronized slide projectors, working with the technologies and new uses of original materials from this archive and those that were the “slideshows” of resistance against the dictatorship in exile.

In the Atacama Desert, Chile, the image of a 2,000-meter-high “corvo” sword lies drawn with chalk in the the driest land of the world. At the top of the drawing is inscribed the number “11”, and on  each side the numbers “73″ and “78″ and a perfect circle of 600 meters of diameter had been traced and petrified.   The corvo, a historic emblem of the Chilean Military Forces, was first used by the army during the Pacífico War in the late 19th century, a time when the same territory was brutally taken from Bolivia and Peru. During the most recent dictatorship under Augusto Pinochet, the weapon was used for the execution of thousands of people as part of a systematic plan of extermination and disappearance in the name of the Chilean nation. All of the signs marked in the drawing remains to dates of military operations during the dictatorship.

There is no sign of the corvo drawn’s authorship, nor of its pointing to any particular place where we should focus our attention. The drawing seems to indicate more than anything the deliberate nature of the gesture and the persistence of the physical territory that holds it. Physical and political map merge into a footprint like a spectrum, which reveals in itself something that has taken place and that which remains absent.
